Experiencing Naturism – Vacationing au naturel!

Naturism as a lifestyle

Enjoy the freedom of being naked? Outside? With other people? Newsflash, nuding isn't just for hippies looking for kicks. Consider a naked vacation with others (in a non-sexual way) to experience a camaraderie that comes naturally when you remove the friction of clothing.

au naturel together Remove your clothing and body image hang-ups slip way. It's the great equalizer between young and old, skinny and fat. The naturist lifestyle, often referred to as clothing optional, nudist, textile-free, uninhibited, liberating ... au naturel, celebrates being naked and sharing the beauty of the natural human form in all our wondrous shapes and sizes.

Yes, nudism is associated with being naughty, arousing, sexually charged, kinky, a fringe faction. But the ability to take a walk, swim, chat, relax in the hot tub with others or play volleyball naked has amazing body-liberating qualities.

Nude resorts stripped bare

baring it all for naturismIf you've never been to a nude resort before, your first visit can be more than a little intimidating. The questions are endless and that's cool. If you're considering an alternative lifestyle resort for the first time, you'll need the following:

  • An open mind is the most important thing to pack.
  • Expect to make friends fast. Stripping away clothes strips away barriers and people are actually friendlier at clothing optional and nudist resorts, from our experience.
  • Remember the towel. You'll need one if you want to sit anywhere.

Naturism vs nudism vs clothing-optional

clothing optional vs naturist Naturism and nudism are interchangeable terms to describe a lifestyle dedicated to public social nudity in a non-sexual interaction (like a nudist resort, naturist club or event). The more modest term for a naturist experience is "clothing-optional" (clothing-optional resort, clothing-optional beach).

On the spectrum of nudity, clothing-optional locations offer more modesty - and choice. Guests can choose how dressed they'd like to be throughout the resort, from full-on nudity everywhere to topless or even fully clothed.

pure nudism at Bare Oaks Naturist ParkNaturist resorts are closer to pure nudism where all activities and time spent there are expected to be fully naked (according to weather conditions). Clothing is not permitted so that all guests are equal all the time. Clothing-optional resorts and beaches offer the bridge to getting comfortable with public social nudity. They're a little easier to find and a great first time experience into the world of nudism.

Take a walk on the wild side

share the nudist experience togetherWe challenge you to step past your hang-ups, culture-obsessed body image, and social gymnophobia (fear of nudity). Make a long weekend out of it with your partner and explore the new feelings. Remove another bucket list item. Discover a naturist resort (almost guaranteed you'll find one in pretty much every state and province), the relaxation and friendship it offers.

While your naughty thoughts may hang around for a bit (and why not), you'll quickly come to appreciate the freedom, the openness and the friendliness of others naked around you.

Great overview of the options! But beyond the naturism vs nudism vs clothing-optional, we actually talk about "ethical naturism". Yes it can just be nude recreation. But it can also be much more than taking your clothes off. When the movement started about a century ago, it was a health philosophy - mandatory calisthenics, vegetarian, no smoking, no alcohol... Today, it can mean just about anything including just being naked for fun when the mood strikes you. But some still see it as a movement with health and ethical considerations: http://www.bareoaks.ca/index.php/en/about-naturism/ethical-naturism.html

Nudism is a fun, healthy, freeing and wholesome way for men and women to socialize and live without clothes. Nudism is a philosophy that values simplicity and increased harmony with nature. truenudist.net offers a friendly and confidential environment for nudists to look for friendships, relationships, and resources concerning the nudist lifestyle. They have members from all over the world who enjoy living naked, skinny dipping, and meeting others with this lifestyle.

Good article about nude recreation. As the owner of a nude sunbathing resort, The Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa in Palm Springs, CA and one of our recommended 'Top 10 Clothing Optional resorts - Exposed" people in the US and Canada looking for places to go for their first experience can go to http://aanr.com for more information. AANR is an 80 year old organization dedicated to nude recreation. It is Called The American Association for Nude Recreation. Now every au naturel location is different. Some are campgrounds, some parks, some weekend getaways, some vacation resorts, etc. Ask questions before booking so that you can pick the right place to go for your first visit. Also many first timers feel more comfortable going to a clothing optional resort as they can ease into nude sunbathing. Many women want to try topless sunbathing before nude sunbathing. Clothing optional resorts are perfect for that. Finally make sure you pack your smile as nudists are the nicest people you will ever meet.

There's an old saying "If you don't try it you'll never know !" In UK there's still the joke factor of going nude/taking your clothes off. Where as the Europeans have a more laissez faire attitude. Enjoy !

Really well done article. Nicely describes the naturist philosophy in down to earth terms and correctly describes naturism as non-sexual in nature. The only thing I would add is the emphasis on how powerful and positive the experience of being nude in nature really is. The feeling of being one with nature and of genuinely being an integral part of the world we are part of..with the associated proximity of the sun, wind and presence of nature around us is absolutely different when nude. As a long term naturist I hope all will take the opportunity to experience clothes-free living at some point...you'll love it!
