Desire Pearl Resort & Spa

Lush tropical beauty and a haven for naughty

Anticipation … After a long international flight, a 20 minute ride from the Cancun airport with twists and turns in the shuttle into back alleys and you begin to wonder where you’re headed. Then, a circular, cobble-stone drive surrounded by rich green landscaping and water gardens emerges. You’ve arrived at the lush Desire Pearl Resort and Spa.

Desire Pearl lobbyEnter the Desire’s lobby, a gorgeous dark terra-stone with vaulting palapa ceilings and clusters of  loveseat – and it all opens to large water garden framed in palm trees and the ocean’s breeze. You’ve arrived to uber-attentive service, gourmet food and a deliciously sensual, relaxing couple’s getaway.

If this is your first visit to Desire, the lobby is your bridge to cross the gap of unknown fears and boundaries. Rules are gently discussed (where clothing-optional is allowed, No means No, etc.) and it’s where you begin to piece the elements of your vacation together. Do I dress for dinner? Where’s the disco? How is the resort laid out? Your tour of the resort begins here as the lush property unfolds around you.

Tropical ocean-view Villas

ocean view luxurySteps from the lobby, you’ll stroll down winding palm-tree lined paths past 7 large Mexican villas that each house 10 or so private suites or rooms (approx. 80) from basic rooms to suites and penthouses – all with spectacular ocean views. Décor is minimalist, Spanish-influenced with ceramic floors and bamboo woodwork. All rooms have patios or a terrace and a few feature a Jacuzzi overlooking a sunken king bed.

Rooms have the regular amenities you’ve come to expect at a crack your door to hear the surfluxury resort, such as big screen TVs, mini-bar and wireless internet. If you’d like to enjoy room service, there is a $10 delivery fee to your room – but the food itself is no-charge (this is an all-inclusive resort).

Crack your patio door at night and let the crashing waves and the breeze through the palm trees lull you to sleep. While love is appropriate everywhere at Desire, your villa is your private lover’s abode.

Beachside pool and Jacuzzi

From your room, follow the path to a powder-white stretch of beach that’s home to luxurious cabanas and loungers (reserve yours early or you’ll be left out) under palm tree canopies. Take a clothing-optional walk along the beach and out to the pier or frolic in the coral-blue surf. This is your new playground.

Hugging the beach is a beautifully long, curvaceous pool with another stretch of beach beds and cabana relaxation polside lounges. Another level back is their spectacular Jacuzzi and swim-up bar. By any Jacu zzi I’ve seen this is a socialite’s heaven. Large enough for more than 50 people with ample seating and raised decks to sun in mere inches of water, this is the central meeting spot with one of the many swim-up bars. Snuggle up with your lover, enjoy a drink together and sink into soothing, sensual relaxation. The Jacuzzi and pool are the central meeting point for the resort – everything centers here – and it’s beautiful.

We did say this was all clothing optional, right? If this isn’t part of your comfort zone, note that we found other guests very respectful and while we did witness public sexuality, we weren’t propositioned.

Desire Spa

sensual time at the spaThe spa, tucked off to the side amongst the palms and flowering tropical shrubs, offers a wide range of individual and couples treatments to enhance the sensual mood between you and your partner. A large stone whirlpool, plunge pool, hot and dry sauna, and swiss shower are indoor amenities you’re welcome to enjoy before or after your treatment.

Couples treatment are side by side and massage options include a chocolate, sensual or, if you’re daring, their very popular (signature) erotic massage. If you opt for the naughty massage, we’re told that touch is very intimate, but no happy endings are delivered – that’s for you and your partner in your private time after the massage. Couples’ massages are 50 minutes of massage time, 15 minutes of private, quiet time together and a 30 minute Jacuzzi soak. The Spa is an additional cost not included in the all-inclusive fees, but well worth the expense for the couples relaxation and therapy they deliver.

Aphrodite and Pearl Restaurants

long gourmet dinners at the Pearl RestaurantAphrodite sits poolside and offers sumptuous, romantic dinners with the sea mere feet away. The Pearl offers patio seating outside for breakfast and lunch buffets. In the evening, slip inside to enjoy the ambiance of swooping, pearl-drop chandeliers and enticing sculpture/art for long, luxurious gourmet dinners wining and dining with your lover.

Evening menus are refreshed daily and travel through a wide range of themes – Mexican, Italian, surf and turf. When we visited, Aphrodite was under construction and the chef offered specialty themed dinners. We booked reservations at his Mexican night and were whisked away with 8 other couples to an intimate side space on the property with private draped alcoves bathed in red relief lighting, candle-lit with a wall waterfall providing relaxing mood-setting. This meal was not for rushing – plan to take your time, linger, relax.

Disco & Playroom

Theme nights at Desire ResortsAs night falls, long decadent dinners open up connections between partners. Beginning about 9 pm in the lobby, a warm-up band (different each night) draws couples closer until the night club opens at 10 pm. Each night has a sexy, spicy theme (Arabian nights, Eyes Wide Shut, Dress to Excess, College schoolgirls, etc) and attire gets sexier and minimalist – the goal here is to tease.

Before you leave home think about your costume for the disco. Go spicy or sexy or just a slightly hotter version of you – but have fun with it. Prepare to flirt with your partner and enjoy the sultry courting until the wee hours of the morning. Teasing, touching, tempting and playful – there are no hard stops here. If you get a little overheated, feel free to slip into the playroom.

The playroom, described as the place where fantasies come to life, is for couples to fulfill their sensual connection. Even with the togetherness of your shared intimacy, stepping into the playroom requires a shared courage. Remember, this about you as a couple so take it slow and only do what you both agree on.

End your night with a nightcap at the 24-hour bar, take a stroll beachside for some surf and romance or enjoy a swim with your partner in the Jacuzzi.

Lifestyle reputation and clientele

Desire Resorts offers a lifestyle playgroundThe Desire Resorts have a reputation as a swinger’s destination and as a wild sensual place. And it’s a well-earned reputation – swingers are part of the culture, but so are couples looking to share intimate time together. We spent 2 hours talking to another couple about the swinger lifestyle and met a lot of great people who truly just wanted to chat with us.

For the record, swingers are a great bunch of people with great respect for couples space and personal boundaries. You may have the perception that the Desire Resort atmosphere is a meat market where unwelcome advances and propositions need to be fended off. We can honestly say we experienced none of that but instead found it relaxing, comfortable and welcoming. While nudity, expressed sexuality and sexy attire is de rigeur, comfort and sensuality are the rule and in any situation “No means No”.

While at Desire Pearl Resort …

As you vacation at Desire Resort, your biggest choices involve whether to spend your time beachside with a great book or partaking in the daily activities the resort offers:
