They may not be castaways, but trustees from Louisiana are good and stranded
1 off-site meeting...
12 visiting trustees...
1 plane that flies to the island
EQUALS...
12 stranded trustees who will probably rethink their next off-site planning meeting.
Island Retreat?Visiting trustees from Louisiana were scheduled to leave Palmyra Island Saturday, but "the plane" needs a new engine. Apparently only one aircraft services the island...
Palmyra Island, about 1,000 miles southwest of Hawaii, is home to an international research outpost and a nationally protected wildlife refuge. It boasts electricity, cabins, supplies - but only one aircraft to ferry visitors to and from the island. No word on whether they discovered the engine trouble during the delivery of the trustees to the island or just when it was time to load them up and leave.
Pacific Air Charters at Honolulu International Airport is retrofitting a twin-engine Cessna plane with a 75-gallon fuel tank to the plane to Christmas Island, 300 miles from Palmyra. Sounds safe.
"They've been there a week and it's time to get off and they have commitments to move onto," Nature Conservancy Director Suzanne Case said. "They are taking it very well. They know that we are moving forward in a safe and calculating way to find an alternative aircraft to transport them."
Hmmm, let's see. An island off the coast of Hawaii. Stranded. Time to kill...
