Reporter Attacked by Victim's Family in Public Lynching
Charmayne Brown's unprovoked attack caught on tape
A South Carolina man was charged yesterday with the murder of his 73-year-old grandfather in Union County. But his family's attack of a reporter from WAP, owned by WKRG News 5 is gathering more attention than the murder.
Charmayne Brown and her photographer, Ti Barnes, stood across the street from the family's house Tuesday, reporting the incident. Three women from the family began yelling racial slurs and then ran across the street and jumped Brown. A photographer from another station caught the attack on camera while the satellite truck operator called 911.
"I just had to try to defend myself," Brown said in an interview. People were coming from everywhere. It was an uneasy situation for the both of us, trying to fight off a mob attacking us."
If you watch the clip, you'll see the woman was across the street reporting when she was swarmed. It looks like people walking by joined as well.
Her photographer said, "We weren't there harassing anybody. We were there to find the facts."
Sounds like being a reporter in Union County could get a little tricky. What do you think of the incident?
