5.4 magnitude earthquake rattles Midwest
If you're in Indiana, you likely woke up to a bit more excitement than you expected this Friday morning. And if you're traveling there or through Indianapolis International Airport, call ahead about cancelations and delays.
Earthquake Rattles the MidwestAt around 4:30 am, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook southern Illinois and Indiana. According to CNN.com, it was felt as far south as Louisville, Kentucky.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says the epicenter of the earthquake was about 3 miles below the ground, 6 miles northwest of Mount Carmel, Illinois and 38 miles north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana.
Air traffic was stopped and the control tower of Indianapolis International Airport was evacuated.
AP News says there are no immediate reports of damage, but there's also no doubt people felt the shake, rattle and roll of the quake. "It shook our house where it woke me up," said David Behm of Philo, 10 miles south of Champaign. "Windows were rattling, and you could hear it. The house was shaking inches. For people in central Illinois, this is a big deal. It's not like California."
CNN reported that buildings swayed in Chicago's Loop and 30 people felt tremors in Clarksville, Tennessee, 227 miles south of the epicenter.
USGS says this is the largest earthquake to shake the region since a 5.4 magnitude quake rattled the area in 1968.
