American Airlines Cancels 200 Flights for Safety Inspections
America's largest airline cancels flights for FAA inspections
If you're flying American Airlines today, call ahead before leaving for the airport. Earlier this morning, the airline canceled 200 domestic flights of MD-80's to comply with FAA inspections.
American Airlines Cancels FlightsThe airline issued a statement earlier saying that the inspections relate to FAA concerns about how a particular bundle of wires is secured to the plane. According to CNN.com, "Airline spokesman Tim Wagner said that while the airline has not grounded any aircraft, the several hours needed to perform each inspection required the flight cancellations."
American Airlines is the largest operator of this particular aircraft - 300 of their 655 fleet. McDonnell-Douglas, the original manufacturer, was bought by Boeing in 1997, which discontinued production in 1999.
The MD-80 issue is completely separate from an FAA announcement on Tuesday that older Boeing 737 jets will be inspected for a problem with a bolt that causes fuel leaks. The bolt problem has been linked to an August 2007 fire that destroyed a China Airlines 737 on the ground in Okinawa, Japan.
Why they're killing all these flights today is still a mystery. Did they just learn about the problem or did one of the planes sidestep a disaster?
According to CNN, other airlines are facing cancelations and delays are Delta Air Lines, Continental Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.
