the girl & the fig
Country French in the heart of Sonoma
The French haven't invaded since Napoleon, but after eating at "the girl and the fig," we're ready to invite them with open arms.
In the heart of Sonoma (right beside the Sonoma
the girl and the figHotel), there's a girl, Sondra Bernstein, lots of figs and a small French bistro that's big on taste.
Bernstein opened the restaurant in 1997, with a mission to showcase Mother Nature's true flavors. One of the signature dishes, a salad prepared with arugula, goat cheese, pancetta, pecans, and grilled figs, is an homage to all that's good and healthy in the valley.
"When you eat this salad, try to get a little bit of
the girl and the figeverything on the fork and it will be perfect," says executive chef John Toulze.
When I visited last spring, I fell in love with the mustard-yellow walls and modern burlesque artwork. Like in France, the tables are tiny and close together and the food (depending on your choice) can be rich, rich, rich. Ask the chef to go easy on the cream and butter.
I was only able to squeeze in a quick lunch, but the wild mushroom risotto cake melted my resistance.
Girl, I dare you to stand firm against this kind of French invasion.

The girl and the fig will be
The girl and the fig will be on Silversea Cruises. Check out Silversea's August 16, 2008 cruise from Barcelona to Rome. Sondra Bernstein, who owns the girl and the fig, and executive chef John Toulze will be aboard to host a Food & Wine cruise. There’ll be cooking demonstrations, food and wine discussions, and special receptions and culinary-themed walking tours. Should be fun for everyone who enjoys divine gourmet food and luxury travel. FYI, I read that Silversea was just named the Number-One overall luxury cruise line in the 2008 Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI) survey.
