Nourish your soul, indulge your dreams

Honor MansionHonor MansionOne guest wrote that a stay here is a cross between a holiday at the Ritz and a visit to a dear friend's home. We think it's a like waking up in the middle of a fairytale.

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of California's Sonoma Valley, The Honor Mansion is a luxury bed and breakfast (and a little slice of heaven) just 80 miles north of San Francisco.

"When you drive up to the front of the house, you Honor MansionHonor Mansionhave no idea what's on this property," Cathi Fowler says. "We take guests across the pond and out to the pool area and they get the ‘shock and awe tour.' You can hear them gasp - every single guest does it."

Built in 1833, the Honor Mansion underwent a multimillion dollar renovation in the early 1990s. Original woodwork, moldings and fixtures serve as a Honor MansionHonor Mansionbackdrop for restored furniture, plush brocades and fine laces.

Any thoughts of upper-crust ceremony disappear when you're greeted by Steve and Cathi Fowler, the innkeepers. Whether it's the PGA putting green, bocce ball, tennis or a Thoreaux walk in the woods, you'll be pleasantly surprised at all you can do (or not do) here.

And since it's a B&B, prepare your stomach for the time of its life each morning. When you wake up, check outside your door for a basket of fresh coffee, biscotti and the newspaper. Later, your breakfast is a Honor Mansion BreakfastHonor Mansion Breakfastculinary adventure. Their famous breakfast frittata (which changes daily) has been featured in the National Culinary Review.

Go ahead, indulge. Your secret's safe with us.

Both times I visited, I stayed one of Vineyard Suites and enjoyed an evening soak in the outside hot tub - Honor MansionHonor Mansionand a morning soak in the indoor one. If you visit during the summer, take your meals on the patio beside the koi pond and under the Redwood trees. If you're like me, you'll do your best to stretch breakfast into lunch.

    Nice story....i like this

Nice story....i like this trend of upscale b&bs. i don't always want to stay at upscale hotel because you just don't get that same personal attentiveness you do at a b&b. but i also don't like many b&bs becasue they're hobbyists, not really looking to share great travel experience. i'll have to look into this one though - too bad they don't have a spa on site...

And yes, we adore the Bay of Fundy :-) While I'll agree it's no longer parka weather in your neck of the woods, it's not quite string bikini weather either. Shall we toast to it and let the beer warm us up? Happy St Paddy's Day! Julia"

    • On Canada Goes Green for St. Patrick's Day, Terri said "hey Travel girls, great to hear that you love our Bay of Fundy here on the east coast of Canada as much as you love Tim Horton's ...and, as a Bay of Fundy chick, I love the green tide analogy. For sure, there will be lots of fun times down here around St Paddy's day but I just want to send you a correction to say you certainly won't be needing a parka? to visit at this time of year. It's +8 to +10 degress Celius (that's in the 50s F for our American friends) - definitely well above parka weather. haha So nice that the birds are chirping and the maple sap is flying out of the trees and, ultimately, on to our pancakes. Happy spring! Terri the Bay of Fundy blogger bayoffundy.blogspot.com "

    • On Tour Bus Crash in Tortola – Caribbean Princess Passenger Dies, Jan said "We were also on the ship with our friends, had spent the day at the beach in Tortola where the slider on my Omega came off, "broke" and lost. I had just purchased it on board the ship the day prior. But nothing can compare to the loss of a family member. The Captain had everyones attention for the announcement. Captain Draper done a great job informing the passengers of the accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rumphrey family."
