Poor Planning Isn't a Good Enough Excuse

I can't take time off work right now - wah, wah, wah...

Thank you to Dez Bartelt for contributing this post to GoGirlfriend. We’re a community-based travel blog and we welcome submissions from everyone. Whether you’re a budget-baller or a first class only kinda traveler, we’d love to hear from you. Visit our Writer’s Guidelines and learn how you can share your travel advice, stories and adventures!

Vacation PlanningVacation PlanningI have a dear friend, whose name I'll keep anonymous. Time after time, I try to get her to come on one of my adventure trips.

Each and every time she says the same thing: "Dez, it's not that I don't want to go. I dream about going on one of your trips. I just have to work too much!"

Best of Both AdventuresBest of Both Adventures

Oh, please, clear your desk and your mind with my advice for an easy plan.

  • Two months ahead: E-mail your boss 2 vacation dates that you like and ask which one she prefers. Include a summary of the projects you're working on and explain why these dates won't interfere.
  • Week before: Alert clients and coworkers that you'll be leaving town.
  • Week of: Ask your boss who should cover for you in your absence. Break the news to your colleague, then hand over your most urgent projects with detailed instructions.
  • Day before: Touch base with your boss and coworker. Tell them you will not check e-mail or voice mail. You're going on vacation.

Sound easy? Share your tips for unchaining yourself from your desk.

Got a question for Dez? Post it here and I'll make sure she gets it.
