Dunedin Florida

Here comes the sun and the sand and the lover's paradise. What were you expecting? It is Honeymoon Island, after all...

Before 1939, it was called Hog Island, but a New York developer built 50 palm-thatched bungalows and soon after the honeymooners began to arrive. Today, the Honeymoon IslandHoneymoon Islandtropical breezes, mild temperatures, and stunning beach invite visitors to bask in the island's natural beauty. Full of Mangroves, marshes, sand dunes and wildlife, Honeymoon Island welcomes all sun-seekers - honeymooners, family and singlets - to enjoy a tranquil, memorable vacation.

Accommodations: Close by Dunedin offers unique Scottish inns, in addition to full-service resorts and campgrounds.

Honeymoon Island Local Activities: Take a romantic walk on the park's natural trails or Pet Beach if you're traveling with your pooch.  If fishing's more your style, spend the day on the boat trying for trout, redfish, snapper, tarpon and sheepshead. If you're looking for romantic activities to enjoy together, try snorkeling in the warm waters of the Gulf or pack the cooler and enjoy a passionate picnic. Ahh, nothing beats love in the afternoon.

Honeymoon Island Area Attractions: We'll agree this isn't exactly a honeymoon activity, but The Dunedin Historical Society & Museum is great if you're into artifacts of Florida's history. Shelling is offered on Anclote Key and a picture-perfect setting with the lighthouse in the background.

Honeymoon Island Area Events:

  • Halloween in the Park (October): Celebrate Halloween in style with haunted hayrides and a ghoulish walk through the nature trails.
  • Annual Seafood and Boat Show (November): Learn fishing tips, enjoy the environmental displays, boats, nature walks and incredible food.

Honeymoon Island Nightlife: Try your luck at the Dunedin casino, strut your stuff at one of the nightclubs, enjoy a drink at a café or pub, or catch a show at the local theatre.

Honeymoon Island Weather: Spring and summer months have average temperatures in the 70F's and 80F's. Fall and winter months are milder with average temperatures between 60F-80F.

Honeymoon Island Facilities: Bathhouses, picnic pavilions, concessions, observation areas and a Pet Beach.

Beach Fees: $5 per vehicle up to 8 people, $3 for cyclists or pedestrians, and $3 per vehicle if you arrive 1 hour before sunset.

  • On Surviving a Hurricane While Traveling, Lisa S. said "Growing up in good ole NC, I have survived my share of storms. Actually, where I sit currently (on a barrier island) has been under water many times. Staying on an island is scary. We leave if it is over a CAT 1. The most important thing for us is to fill our gas tanks at the first inkling that there may be a storm. Water, medicines, non perishable food, they're all really important. Honestly, if it is a big storm, alcohol later serves as pay for work. We stock up on EVERYTHING. We start eating out of the freezer days before (like we did tonight, getting ready for Earl). You don't want much to go bad. Then we tie up all the trash cans, secure grills, and hold on for dear life :)"

  • On American Tourist Kidnappings on the Rise in Mexico, Roger said "Better not to drive if you can travel by bus. Buses are not apt to be targets like cars with US plates that also can be stolen. The buses in Mexico are very comfortable like flying in a plane they often have movies and it is safer.Plan your trip and don't travel alone especially if you are female.Women traveling alone are a target Good luck and stay alert."
