What caused the slashing - Passion or adventure?

Remember Lorena and John Bobbit and the penis slashing that skyrocketed the couple to stardom in 1993? Alan Chad Reed doesn't just remember it - he's living the agony this morning.

Reed is recovering in a Dominican Republic hospital today after his girlfriend discovered him in bed, his nether region covered in blood. Ellie Rotherey, 21 and Bobbit Attack?Bobbit Attack?her fiancé, Alan Chad Reed, 33, were separated during an evening out.

The incident is shrouded in mystery though. Rotherey says they were separated when she went outside the restaurant where they were having dinner to find a taxi. When she returned, Reed was gone. After searching the beach, she headed back to the hotel.

"He was sprawled out on the bed in just a pair of shorts that were covered in blood when I walked in," she said. "I alerted hotel reception immediately and they phoned for an ambulance as soon as they came to the room and saw the state Chad was in."

Rotherey maintains her fiancé wasn't attacked but might have cut himself while shaving. But authorities have already made several arrests. They believe the attack happened on the beach and not in the hotel room.

"The problem is he hasn't been able to tell us anything, because he says he can't remember anything," said Police Chief, Robert Contreras. "We believe he had been drinking heavily and that may have been a factor in his failure to remember."

Rotherey called home to her mom in London to tell her about the incident and assure her mom she was fine. Today, her mother Louise Rotherey said she "fell about the bed laughing" when she heard the incident was being characterized as "another Bobbit."

Nice, mom.

Unlike the Bobbit case, Reed's member wasn't completely severed. Doctors say Reed will likely be in the hospital until Friday but have assured the couple that all the important parts are healing and will be in working order again.

Not the best way to celebrate your engagement.

We'd like to know how he found his way back to the hotel room if he'd been drinking so heavily he doesn't even remember his favorite body part being slashed.

What do you think happened?

I had just purchased it on board the ship the day prior. But nothing can compare to the loss of a family member. The Captain had everyones attention for the announcement. Captain Draper done a great job informing the passengers of the accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rumphrey family."

My heart was so heavy over the thought of his dear parents losing their son on what was to be a very happy time. My heart is with his family and I will pray for them."

I was very impressed with the way Captain Draper handled the situation and I told him so. He made it a priority to inform all passengers and eliminated rumor and speculation. It's nice to know the other passengers involved felt the driver saved their lives. The roads in Tortola are terrible and I'm sure much skill is involvd navigating them safely. I hope you enjoyed your cruise, despite this tragedy. Julia"
