Feed your travel addiction with a treasure hunt
There are so many ways to explore the world. Go ahead. Indulge your inner, adventurous child and join the geocaching craze - the world's biggest treasure hunt.
Our last geocaching post introduced you to the world of geocaching and opportunities to find new and beautiful places of interest along your travels or even in your own backyard. Waterfalls many don't know exist, beautiful wooded grottos and new areas simply around the corner are yours to find with the help of your phone or GPS and a Geocaching adventure.
World-travelling bug
While on our travels a few years ago, Ms GoGirlfriend and I planted a GoGirlfriend Travel Bug destined to travel the world and document its travels.
For those of you muggles (non-geocachers), a travel bug is a trinket, ID tagged so it's journey can be documented. You deposit your travel bug in a cache and another geo-cacher picks it up, logs their location and re-deposits it in another cache somewhere else in the world. As it repeats the pattern, it hop-scotches the globe in whatever direction the wind of the cacher takes it.
Our GoGirlfriend travel bug began its journey in Ontario, Canada. Check out the stops our bug has logged along it's 1600+ stops and 65,980 km journey ...
- Virginia and North Carolina
Colossal Cave, Arizona
- Oakland and San Francisco, California
- Peterborough, England
- Around and near Stredocesky Kraj, Czech Republic
More than 3 Million caches
My geo-caching travels have taken me to over 75 or so caches across 10 countries. Only a few have been arduous climbs and treks to get to the cache itself, but almost all have revealed a vista, a perspective or an area I would never have found if not in the pursuit of adventure with my trusty GPS as my guide.
Geocaching is an inexpensive adventure with more than 3 million free caches around the planet waiting for you and your partner can explore as a together outdoor adventure or as a family treasure hunt. You'll be amazed how much adrenaline kicks in when you wager your partner for a reward to the first to find the cache. What are you willing to bet???
Continue to check back often and watch the travels of our GoGirlfriend travel bug around the world. Basic access to the journey can be found at our GoGirlfriend Travel bug page, and full access can be unlocked with a free account created at geocaching.com.
Are you a geo-cacher? Do you have any world-travelling bugs? We'd love to hear your story of your best geocache location you found and how you stumbled across it.
