Palmer House Hilton Charges $10 a Night

Couple spends 60th anniversary in penthouse suite at 1947 rates

Larry and Mariam Orenstein honeymooned at Chicago's Palmer House Hilton 60 years ago, and for Palmer House HiltonPalmer House Hiltontheir anniversary they wanted to recreate that first fateful night.

The hotel was willing to help.

Since 1929, it's been offering guests who visited more than 50 years prior a chance for another night at the same rate they paid originally.

Larry and Mariam saved their bill from their honeymoon and were given a $1,600 room for $10, which their 12-year-old grandson paid as an anniversary gift.

Palmer House HiltonPalmer House HiltonFewer than 10 customers have taken advantage of the offer in the last 25 years, but the 136-year-old hotel has no plans to discontinue the program.

So, if your parents or grandparents are rounding the 50-year mark, help them dig out the original receipt (a stipulation of the deal). Like the Orensteins, they may even be upgraded to a penthouse suite, which is a sweet reward for 50 years of marital, uh, bliss...
