Canadian border incident linked to Thursday's bombing

Four men trying to cross the Canadian border last month may be responsible for the Time Square bombing yesterday.

Border CrossingApparently 4 men attempted to cross the border (officials aren't saying exactly where) in February. They were detained for questioning, but 2 of the men fled and got away. They left behind a backpack containing pictures of various New York locations, including the bombed military recruitment center in Times Square.

There is no hard and fast evidence linking the 2 incidents but the FBI, NYPD and Homeland Security are working with Canadian authorities to learn more about the border incident. "It's being looked into by federal officials. That stop did take place in Canada. Some pictures of Times Square, including the recruiting station were found," police chief Ray Kelly told CNN.com.

Also of concern are 100 letters that were delivered to democratic members of Congress early Thursday morning. The long anti-war letters arrived with pictures of a man standing in front of the recruiting office before it was bombed. There was no bomb threat, but it's too strong of a coincidence to ignore.

The explosion early Thursday morning reminded many people of September 11, 2001, and ignited a swift and efficient police reaction. Traffic was immediately cut off as NYPD began combing the area for clues.

A grainy surveillance tape shows the bomber riding into Times Square, getting off the bike and walking over to the recruiting center. Moments later, there is an explosion. The bike has been recovered, but images were to blurry to identify the man.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said New York would not be intimidated. "The fact that this appears deliberately directed at the recruiting station insults every one of our brave men and women in uniform stationed around the world fighting to defend our freedoms," he told reporters.
