Stonehenge an Ancient Spa?
Bluestones may have been an early therapeutic treatment
Can't get enough of your hot stone massages? What about a hot stone facial? Recent discoveries at Stonehenge suggest we aren't the first ones to turn to the spa when we need some down time.
The mysterious circle of stones on Salisbury Plain, England, is an undisputed archaeological marvel. But
Stonehengethe placement of the overwhelmingly large stones have long frustrated archeologist. How did the stones get there? Why were they put there and how were they used?
Researchers have long assumed it was a place of sacrament for the dead, but according to the Chicago Tribune, it may have actually been an ancient spa. A team of British archeologists are exploring the possibility that 82 bluestones (some of them weigh as much as 4 tons) were brought to the site from mountains 250 miles away. From the Chicago Tribune:
"Tim Darvill, a professor at the University of Bournemouth, and Geoff Wainwright, president of the Society of Antiquaries of London, have spent six years researching Stonehenge and the rocky outcrop Carn Menyn, thought to be the exact site in the Preseli Hills from which the bluestones were taken.
Darvill and Wainwright, the co-directors of the dig, found the Welsh site to be a center for ceremony and burials, where the springs that flowed below the rocks were regarded by ancients as having medicinal powers. They hope that by finding evidence to tie the stones from the Preseli Hills to those at Stonehenge, they will have an answer to the age-old mystery of the site's purpose."
Scientists hope to eventually discover if the stones were transported manually or whether the former Irish Sea Glacier carried them there.
Either way, we think it's cool how stone therapies have
Spa Timelong soothed our aching souls. And it more than justifies the amount we spend at the spa for those hot stone massages.
Love it when science validates my addictions.
