Forget beach holidays for boomers - they're all about adventure

Adventure in ArgentinaAdventure in ArgentinaThink trekking the Himalayas is for backpacking 20-somethings trying to escape the onset of real life? Not likely.

According to a survey released this week by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), Baby Boomers are done pulling their Chevy up to the levy. They want it all.

Fly-and-flop holidays are out. Bring-it-on adventures are in.

Maybe we're tired of vacations that undo all those Gal-Pal PowerGal-Pal Powermornings at the gym or maybe we've just hard-wired ourselves to keeping moving - whether we're on vacation or not. Doesn't really matter though because it's clear we're having the time of our lives.

Dale Urquhart of BCAA Travel, a chapter of CAA, told Reuters that people are looking for vacations that turn into tales they share with their friends. She sees university educated professionals looking for trips that teach them how to cook, learn a new skill or experience a sport.

Chefs are brought into rented Italian villas or European riverboats, snowshoe experts to Olympic venues and even pole dancing instructors to 5-star resorts. And while volunteer vacations are still a niche market, more and more people are giving up their downtime altogether to help build schools and wildlife preserves.

According to Reuters, Baby Boomers drove adventure travel bookings to places like Africa, Peru and Nepal up by 30% in 2007.

Not bad for a been-there, done-that generation.

Where are you going in 2008? More importantly, what are ya gonna do there?
