Anne Boleyn Reminds Me of My Must-Travel-To List
Unlike Prince Harry, I adore England
Prince Harry told reporters today, "But I generally don't like England that much and, you know, it's nice to be away..."
We all have places we'd do just about anything to visit. Mine is England. I know, it's shocking that I haven't been able to find my way there yet, but it's the sad, sorry truth.
The Other Boleyn Girl - Sony PicturesI've been consoling myself for years with Philippa Gregory's books - I've read everything she's ever written. And each book fueled my fire to visit all the places in her books - pretty much anywhere on the island.
But now The Other Boleyn Girl has hit theatres and it sounds like I'm going to be underwhelmed.
CNN says the movie's been sold as a "classy bodice-ripper," but the screen play of the novel plays out more like a soap opera than a vivid retelling of history.
There's not much about this story that needed to be sexed-up though. King Henry VIII was sleeping with one sister, officially courting the other - all while being married to a woman he later divorced. There are illegitimate babies, intrigue, deception and eventually the beheading of the beautiful Anne Boleyn. It's got everything Hollywood filmmakers salivate over and more.
According to Reuters, "The Other Boleyn Girl" stars Scarlett Johansson as the sister of Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn, played by Natalie Portman. The movie recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and is expected to earn $9 million.
At first blush, I think they got the casting all wrong. Johansson has Anne Boleyn written all over her pouty lips and fiery beauty, while Portman could easily pull off the meek, cast-aside sister.
Maybe I'll save myself the disappointment and put the money in the Send-Julia-to-England-Fund, which is ridiculously small right now.
Are you planning to see The Other Boleyn Sister?
