Fly better, faster and cheaper

Flying the friendly skies - habitually - has taught me a few tricks. Trust me when I say experience is the most inefficient way to learn how to do this comfortably and cheaply. There's a better way - find someone who's suffered and do the exact opposite. Here are a few Saving Money OnlineSaving Money Onlinetips to get you started.

  • Best Days to Fly: If you're jetting off for a weekend fling, you'll find cheaper fares if you leave on Saturday and return on Tuesday. And we all know it's easier to call in sick on a Monday than it is a Friday.
  • Best Steerage Seat: Can't afford business class? No problem. Visit Seat Guru and look up the aircraft you'll be flying. You'll find out which seats don't offer leg or elbow room, recline or have an obstructed view of the screen - and leave them for someone else.
  • Best Way to Reach a Real Person: Borrow a friend's elite frequent-flier status card and use the special phone number. If that's not an option, call the airline and choose the number that connects you to the international booking agent - he'll find the person you need to speak to.
  • Easiest Way to Earn Loyalty Miles: Airline websites, like Continental and Delta, link to a huge range of stores - Land's End, Staples, Barns & Noble - some of them offer as many as 10 loyalty miles per dollar spent.
  • Best Loyalty Program: Starwood Amex allows you to redeem points on all of its 30 airlines - including every major US carrier. You'll earn 1.25 miles for every dollar you spend and you'll get 5000 points for every 20,000 you redeem.

    A few more tips:

    - Ask a pilot or flight attendant: If you have friends that are flight attendants or pilots, ask them when's the best time to fly their airline or where to find cheaper flights. You'd be amazed at the information they might have.

    - Compare local airports: For instance, if you have to fly to New York, don't just look at JFK - you might find cheaper flights going into LaGuardia, Newark, Islip-MacArthur and White Plains. Those airports are no more than 40 minutes away from JFK. When I went to San Francisco this summer, I found it cheaper to fly into Oakland.
