Flying the friendly skies - habitually - has taught me a few tricks. Trust me when I say experience is the most inefficient way to learn how to do this comfortably and cheaply. There's a better way - find someone who's suffered and do the exact opposite. Here are a few

A few more tips:
- Ask a pilot or flight attendant: If you have friends that are flight attendants or pilots, ask them when's the best time to fly their airline or where to find cheaper flights. You'd be amazed at the information they might have.
- Compare local airports: For instance, if you have to fly to New York, don't just look at JFK - you might find cheaper flights going into LaGuardia, Newark, Islip-MacArthur and White Plains. Those airports are no more than 40 minutes away from JFK. When I went to San Francisco this summer, I found it cheaper to fly into Oakland.
