Tips for staying safe at a hotel

Safety/security continues to be the #1 issue facing today's woman travelers. If you arm yourself with some tips, tricks and tools, you'll feel more confident and safe. And you'll be better prepared to handle any unexpected turbulence that might come your way.

Kathleen's Advice

Let's start with security precautions in a hotel. Hotel security begins at check-in.

When you check in, be sure the desk clerk announces your room in a voice that only you can hear. You don't want anyone else to know what room you're in.

If the desk clerk has announced your room in too loudThe Woman Road WarriorThe Woman Road Warrior a voice and others overhear, politely tell the clerk that you're sure the room is very nice, but for security purposes you would prefer that no one else know your room number and you would like a different room. If the clerk resists (which is unlikely), ask to speak to the "Manager on Duty."

Be adamant that the hotel take responsibility for making you feel safe and secure during your stay, and if they have done something (like announcing your room to everyone at the desk) to make you feel otherwise, you have the right to request a change.

More on hotel security and safety next week with Kathleen.
