The Stables at Tamaya Hyatt Regency

Horseback Riding FunHorseback Riding FunHorseback riding at luxury resorts is an old standby. Not sure what to do with the guests? Offer them an underfed and aging horse to trot along a narrowly roughed out trail.

Not at Tamaya Hyatt, a Santa Ana Pueblo-owned resort.

Much like the resort is run with respect for the land and native peoples, the Stables operate with their horses' welfare a top priority. In all honesty, I've never seenThe StablesThe Stables such pampered, beautiful horses.

And it's not a nose to tail ride here. Going off trail or heading up into the hills is encouraged - as long as you put nature's needs ahead of your own. No trampling small bushes or needlessly stirring up dust for riders behind you.

My ride along the Rio Grande through the cottonwood trees would have been enough to make the trip worthwhile, but the nachos and margaritas at sunset sealed the deal for me.

Horseback Riding FunHorseback Riding FunIf you're planning a trip to New Mexico, consider a side-trip to the Stables at Tamaya - half-way between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Staying at the resort is not a requirement, and a day trip is a great way to get outside and enjoy the landscape.

New Mexico enjoys more than 300 sunny days each year, so pack your sunscreen and a hat. And of course, shoes or boots are a must. You'll understand why if a 1200 lb horse steps on your toes.

Best horseback riding is at

Best horseback riding is at Windwalker Guest Ranch in Spring City, Utah. Awesome scenery, accomodations, food, etc. A great place to "recharge your physical and spiritual batteries." I have been going there EVERY vacation for 5 years, experienced all 4 seasons and I still keep going back as there is always something that is left undone for which I have to return. Not just a vacation spot, it is like "going home" as you are treated like family. A MUST experience for women. Check it out at: Windwalker.org
