Check in for a spine-tingling visit

Night-shift nurses, star-crossed lovers and woeful widows are just a few hotel guests who've checked in - but never checked out. If you don't mind sharing your room with the paranormal, check out these favorites:

Don't Follow that Ball

The Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas, built in 1886, is one of the most haunted hotels in America.

In 1887, a senator's young daughter fell to her death Driskill HotelDriskill Hotelwhile playing with a ball on the grand staircase. Many guests over the years claim to hear a bouncing ball and laughter throughout the first-floor lobby, the ladies' room on the second floor and staircase leading to the mezzanine.

A Dedicated Nurse

Built in 1889, The Admiral Fell Inn in Baltimore, Md., was originally a hospice for injured sailors. At least one of the nurses dedicated more than just her life to healing - she's pretty busy in the hereafter as well.

Guests who stay in Room 218 often report late-night visits by a woman dressed in a black skirt with a red sash and white cap moving from bed to bed, smiling at unseen patients. When addressed, she smiles and promptly exits via the nearest wall.

Solemn John

The Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, built in 1886, hosted the International Society of Paranormal Research (ISPR) while they got up close and personal Hotel MonteleoneHotel Monteleonewith "Solemn John." Apparently, the Tennessee businessman took his own life at the hotel after a deal went south during the Great Depression. He's a melancholy wandering presence at the hotel, but seemingly harmless.

The Woeful Wanderer

In 1892, Kate Morgan checked into the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, and 5 days later (on Thanksgiving Day) she was found dead in her room Beautiful StrangerBeautiful Strangerfrom a gunshot wound to the head. Guests who stay in her 5th floor room profess to hearing footsteps above - the hotel only has 5 floors though. During a presidential visit from then-Vice President George Bush, a Secret Service agent demanded to be moved after a late-night visit from Kate.

If the "Beautiful Stranger" can spook one of those guys, she's one serious ghost.
