A French-Italian restaurant in Quebec City

Just across the street from the Chateau Frontenac and overlooking Place d'Armes, Gambrinus Restaurant serves Italian food with a unique French flair. The strolling violinist, old brick walls and a web of hanging plants overhead set the mood for cozy romance.

It's hard to find fault with Quebecois restaurants, and Gambrinus is no exception. The wine list plays second fiddle only to the bread, which is like manna from Gambrinus RestaurantGambrinus Restaurantheaven. And their onion soup is a hearty rival to Aux Anciens Canadiens.

My partner, adventurous eater that he is, ordered the deer loin in berries and pasta medallions (deer stuffed, of course).

Inventive vegetarian in traditional Quebecois restaurants is hard to find, but I settled for their homemade fettuccine alfredo. Honestly, the sauce alone was silky smooth and completely unhealthy. I could feel my hips swelling with each bit, but it was worth it.

I finished off my meal with traditional Quebec cheeses while my partner gave into the seduction of a crème brule in maple syrup.

If you go...

Cast economy to the wind and draw the evening out by sampling as much as you possibly can. Work it off walking back your hotel. Lunch is served from noon to 2pm, dinner is served 5pm - 11pm. Evening main courses range from $27-$35CAN and reservations are recommended.
