Disney Expands Vision to Hawaii
Ko Olina will soon be home to another Disney Resort
Walt Disney Parks & Resorts announced today that they're setting up house on 21 acres of oceanfront property on Hawaii's island of Oahu. Scheduled to open in 2011, the resort will boast more than 800 units, including hotel rooms, villas and the rapidly expanding Disney Vacation Club Timeshare.
Oahu's picturesque Ko Olina Marina, Honolulu's premier resort destination, is all about the sweeping
White sandy beachesnatural beauty of tranquil lagoons and white sand beaches. Sure it's already a pricey, touristy, hot-spot, but Disney? Come on...
I've visited Disney resorts, and while some can be perfect (in a Stepford sort of way), some will leave you twitching before you hand over your credit card at check-in. Ever been to an All Star Resort? Enough said.
On the plus side, it'll mean more than a thousand jobs
Walt Disney World for locals - Business Week Magazine recently pinpointed Disney as one of the top places to launch a career. Steve Martin, Robin Williams and to some degree, Britney Spears, likely agree. Hawaii's reputation as a family destination fits with the glossy Disney image, and the fact that there are no plans for a theme park makes this news moderately easier to tolerate.
Hopefully they won't pay homage to Hawaii's heritage the same way they did at the Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando - bizarre 57-foot dolphin and 47ft swan statues that look more like alien trash than architecture....
