Traditional Quebec cuisine in a rustic setting
Smack in the middle of La Belle Province sits the oldest home in the country (1677) and a surprisingly fair-priced restaurant. But don't count on typical menu items - caribou and maple syrup define many of the dishes.
The restaurant is split into 5 unique rooms, all with 
Aux Anciens Canadienstheir own dishes and servers in period costumes. Make no mistake though - this isn't Disney. It's a cozy cottage that serves food meant to stick to your bones and keep you warm through a cold Quebec winter.
The ambience is cheerful, very Quebecois French and completely unpretentious.
My partner began his meal with the French onion soup - prompting him to recite vows of undying devotion. The Trapper's Treat - a pheasant meat pie and buffalo casserole - put him over the edge.

It's not a vegetarian friendly restaurant, though - my fresh garden vegetables had been stewed beyond recognition in a suspicious-looking gravy.
Like all Quebec restaurants, the bread defied definition and I was happy to substitute. My hips argued but I silenced them with more bread.
We finished our meal with a maple syrup pie, which felt like a fully decked-out sugar gala in my mouth. And it made up for the lack of vegetarian options.

Lunch is served from noon to 5:45pm. Your best bet is the 3-course meal for $14.75CAN. Evening main courses range from $33-$49CAN and reservations are recommended.
