Whether you're climbing Mount Everest or touring the tropical forests of the Amazon, choosing the right outfitter can make or break your vacation. The perfect outfitter can take you beyond a great vacation, but choose the wrong one and you'll be facing boredom - and in a worst case scenario the hospital.

Don't assume that every outfitter available will keep you in good hands - just because you're paying doesn't mean they have the skills or experience. A good Adventure Travel OutfittersAdventure Travel Outfittersoutfitter is a professional risk taker and knows the difference between adventurous and dangerous. Questionable outfitters operate under the belief that adventure is the priority, not safety.

Not sure how to find the an outfitter who can balance safety with adventure?

Options and expectations

A lot of details go into planning a trip which means that there is plenty of room for error and miscommunication.  Whether you're traveling for a week or a month, let your outfitter know exactly what you expect from them - and make sure they agree.

Fully or partially outfitted: Would you rather have a fully outfitted adventure where the outfitter leads the way, or would you prefer a guide who gets you to your destination and then lets you explore on your own?

Accommodations: Sleep under the stars wherever you day leads you to or retreat to a cabin for the night? Do you mind sharing sleeping space with others or do you need privacy, central heating and a continental breakfast?

Luggage: Are you planning to lug huge bag all day or just a day pack? Do you expect help getting your luggage from place to place or can you handle it yourself?

Facilities: Do you want a bathroom with running water and toilets or are you okay with an outhouse? Do you expect your own bathroom or can you share with neighboring vacationers?

Food: Do you expect to be catered to or is brown bagging it more your speed? Do you have special dietary restrictions or can you eat whatever everyone else is eating? Can you cook over an open fire or do you prefer to be served?

Spare Time: Do you prefer to be have spare time for individual exploring or do you want all your time scheduled?

Starting your Day: What time do you wake up? Is sunrise too early or do you prefer to crawl out of bed at noon? Would you rather the outfitter plan the day around this time or would you be willing to wake up when they say it's time to go?

Sightseeing: Do you want to see only nature, or do you want to travel into town? Is exploring the outback the only option or do you have specific sites you want to see?

Energy levels: Can you handle a full day of the outdoors or is a half day all you need? Is cycling, walking or swimming out of the question or are you fit enough to handle it. What level of exertion can you handle before it becomes too much?

Once you know what you want, you'll find it easier to communicate your expectations with an outfitter. Make sure you ask specific questions and if you're hesitant about their answers, clarify your concerns.

Good advice. Choose the

Good advice. Choose the wrong outfitter and you could be in for a really rotten trip. And it really is about personality. don't kid yourself into thinking you can do something that's just not for you. Not only will you be miserable but so will everyone else who is forced to listen to your complaining....
