Getting the most out of your adventure travel

Dez Bartelt is the president/ and co-owner of Best of Both Adventures for Women. Her company, which leads trips everywhere from Patagonia to Kenya has been in the adventure travel business for 20 years.

Nancy, GG Reader: What's the attraction of adventure travel?

Argentina AdventureArgentina AdventureDez: People have become more interconnected with cell phones and email everywhere. Downtime has become so rare that when you can get away there is this urge to go where you'll be out of touch, where you'll have an experience totally unlike your everyday life. That's what adventure travel is today.

Sarah, GG Reader: What are the golden rules of safe adventure travel?

Dez: First, choose your trips wisely. Go with a company that has an established history and systems in place.

Niki, GG Reader: What's the advantage of taking an adventure trip with a group, rather than mapping it out for yourself?

Dez: Going with a company like ours is not for everybody. There are people who can create their own itinerary, get their own gear together and map out a route. Those people should do that.

We've been in the business for 20 years and we're Hotel BarilocheHotel Barilocheblessed with an extraordinary collection of trip leaders who bring understanding, cultural contact and safety, which is very difficult to get by yourself without those years of experience.

Liz, GG Reader: So, if I want to adventure, where do you suggest?

Dez: I see the places that have been remote becoming more familiar, so there'll be more people going to Patagonia or Panama (the new Costa Rica). I see that outer-edge group, which is constantly looking for the new places, going deeper maybe into unexplored South America or deeper into Kenya, Africa.

Our planet is changing every day and seeing those far and away places are a must for anyone looking for adventure.

Got a question for Dez? Post it here and I'll make sure she gets it.
