Pinellas County, in the Clearwater area on Florida's West coast

There's just something about white sandy beaches that gets you hotter than a crepe suzette. We know what kind of girl you really are. But what happens when that beach connects you to 5 sweet islands and more than 1,000 acres of blissfully calm, clear, water. Be still our hearts.

Fort DeSoto boasts more than 7 miles of waterfront, and is a goldmine for history buffs who want to balance their sunbathing with learning. Take a walking tour Fort DeSoto ParkFort DeSoto Parkaround the island and see the remnants of artillery (including rifles mounted to the base of the fort). Whether you're going for the beach, recreating history or just taking a day trip to visit untouched parkland, Fort DeSoto is an amazing choice.

Accommodations: Fort DeSoto has 238 campsites directly on the beach complete with tables, grills, water, electricity, washrooms and showers. Nearby Tampa Bay also offers resorts, hotels and motels for those who aren't into roughing it.

Fort DeSoto Park Local Activities: Nature enthusiasts can swim, bike, hike, fish, canoe and kayak. Trek through the nature trails into the Soldiers Hole; an area that has a great view of the native fauna and flora. Want to swim with the urchins? Get your snorkeling gear on and get up close and personal with sea life.

Fort DeSoto Area Attractions: If you love history, visit the fort and discover a day in the life of a soldier. The fort was built in 1898 and still has remnants of the artillery used in the wars. If you're a tree-hugger, take a side trip to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Committed to the rehabilitation and rescue of sea life, marine animals and sea turtles, the aquarium is a must-see.
