Common travel myths unraveled and explained

Following urban travel myths as hard and fast rules is like hoping to find the Wizard of Oz at the end of the Yellow Brick Road. While there may have been a Earth: Yours to TravelEarth: Yours to Travelkernel of truth at the outset to some rules and myths, most are distorted and just plain untrue.

Peter Greenburg from ForbesTravel.com explored 7 common myths and we've highlighted 4 of them. What do you think?

If I use my cellphone, will the plane crash?

No. The FAA tested a variety of handheld electronic devices, (including Blackberries, cellphones, etc) and was unable to find a connection between them and a plane's navigational systems. So, if you insist on sending a few emails while in the air, you may be in violation of the airline's policy (which could earn you an arrest for disobeying the flight crew) but you won't crash the plane.

Will my credit card cover damages to the rental car I charged?

Yes, but only if you already own a car and have car insurance. Credit card companies "promise" to cover damages to rental cars charged to your car, but only after you've exhausted your personal insurance. If you don't have car insurance, you're not covered at all. And if your personal auto is worth less than the rental, you'll be out the difference.

Is my cruise all-inclusive?

No. While it's true you won't need your wallet onboard, you will be signing for drinks (including soft drinks), casino time, shops, spa treatments and anything extra you want. Need some help budgeting for your cruise? Multiply each base fare by 1.75% for a more realistic final fee.

Will the air during flight make me sick?

The recent ruling on Airborne has many travelers wondering how to stay healthy while breathing recycled air. There is no scientific evidence to prove recycled air can actually make you sick, but chances are if the guy 3 rows ahead is sneezing, you'll be breathing that same air eventually. Staying hydrated, washing your hands and turning off the air vent above your head remain the best advice for getting through unscathed.
