The hairy nightmare of getting around during the Olympics

Beijing TaxiBeijing TaxiBy the Olympics there will be 7 subway systems, improved roads and more taxis than ever, so give up the notion of driving - which isn't safe at the best of times.

Wikipedia has a terrific map of the subway system. If you are going to use a cab, make sure you show your driver the address from a map like this - an easy way to avoid being scammed into unnecessary detours. Although taxi drivers are required to know some basic English, the sheer volume of people in the city will make this impossible to police.

Regardless of how much you plan for an event like this, remember the golden rule of travel - plan ahead but expect spur-of-the-moment changes. And don't forget your travel insurance.

Heading to Beijing for the Olympics? How's the planning coming?
