Put your best (and safest) foot forward

Safety for RunnersSafety for RunnersDo you like to run as part of your workout routine while on the road? If so, consider running on the hotel's indoor track. Otherwise, you will need to run outdoors, probably through city streets in an unfamiliar place. Running with a friend is better, but whether alone or with a friend, you still need to take precautions.

Ask the hotel concierge for the names of local health clubs or running stores that may have running facilities you can use. They may also be able to advise you on safe places if you plan to run alone. Better yet, they may sponsor a running club you can join for your daily run. In addition to helping you feel more secure, a running club is a great way to meet new people.

Since you probably aren't going to be taking your cell phone with you on your run, add an extra level of security by having an ID tag made. Have a contact name and phone number engraved on the plate and lace it into your shoe.

Before leaving your hotel room, put a note on the desk stating where you went, when you left and what you were wearing. You may also want to bring some money with you in case of an emergency.
