Would you do it again?

Peru Welcomes YouPeru Welcomes YouTeresa Thompson, our Hot Metal Mama, took time off from her real life to hike the Peruvian mountains with her girlfriends. We've been chatting with Theresa about her trip, so be sure to check the previous posts if you've missed them.

  • Part 6: Challenges on the trails
  • Part 5: Hotels and spa treatments
  • Part 4: Training for the mountains
  • Part 3: Transforming the idea into a plan
  • Part 2: Coordinating 4 schedules
  • Part 1: Flight schedules and travel insurance

GoGirlfriend: Can you share some of the surprisingly wonderful things that happened?

TT: I think, in hindsight, the wonderful things were moments that are like snapshots in my head:

    • Standing on the top of Machu Picchu, realizing that I was actually there.
    • That I had hiked 26 miles to do it.
    • Giggling like little girls on the train ride from Aguas Caliente to Cusco telling stories to each other that we'd never told anyone else.
    • Having a 2-hour lunch at an outdoor cafe with 3 remarkable women.
    • Realizing, right there, in the moment, what an amazing time I was having. I call it "Be Here Now" can be a really hard thing to do when you're travelling.

GG: Did you have any challenges within the group?

TT: Other than Betsy breaking her leg, no, our little group rocked.

GG: If a friend was considering something like this, what would you tell her that you wish someone would have told you?

TT: Actually, I think the biggest lesson I learned from Theresa ThompsonTheresa Thompsonthis whole experience was that had someone really told me how hard the hike was going to be, I probably wouldn't have done it, which would have been criminal since I did it and it ended up being one of the greatest trips I'll probably ever take.

So, I guess I would say, prepare, do your homework, but whatever you do - GO!

GG: Would you do it again?

TT: Tomorrow. And probably again the week after that. I'm already planning my next girlfriends trip.....I'll let you know when I know!
