Lush, dreamy and big on Caribbean flavor

Caribbean DelightsCaribbean DelightsSt. Kitts & Nevis - a dual-island nation - offer some of the tastiest food in the southern Caribbean.

Thankfully, it doesn't really matter which island you visit, you're in for a gastronomical treat. You'll be tempted at every corner - everything here is displayed with an I-know-you-want-it attitude - but don't miss the real gems.

St. Kitts

  • Rawlins Plantation: Lunch on a patio - any patio, really - is as much a Kittian tradition as high tea in Britain. If the jerk chicken, candied sweet potatoes or breadfruit curry aren't enough to entice you, the view of St. Eustatius and the glittering Caribbean ocean will seal the deal. (Lunch approx $65-$75US, Dinner $100-$125US)
  • Turtle Beach Bar & Grill: Honey-mustard ribs, coconut-shrimp salad and bread pudding in rum sauce add up to a popular local watering hole. You can even feed the monkeys (they belly up to the bar demanding green bananas and peaches), watch the hawksbill turtles and rent a kayak or snorkeling equipment. Come Friday night for the lobster, Sunday for dancing and live bands. (Lunch approx $12-$20US, Dinner approx $20-$30US)

Nevis

  • The Hermitage: The menu changes nightly at this plantation-style inn, but the dishes are always filled with their privately grown pork, lamb and produce. And if you feel a metaphysical crisis coming on - yes, the food is this good - the property is in the shape of a cross, so relax. Dinner is the social event of the day here, and the open-air dining room is hailed as one of the finest on the island. (Lunch approx $25US, Dinner fixed price $50)

  • Sunshine's Bar & Grill: Drinking 8 Killer Bees (a deliriously sweet rum drink) earns you a free appetizer. You can kiss sobriety away though. The owner, a dreadlocked ex-caddie, grills chicken, seafood and ribs while posing for pictures with his celebrity guests. Come for sustenance, enjoy the vibe. (Lunch $10US-$12US, Dinner $20US-$30US)
