Changing how we get from the parking lot to the plane

Heathrow airport has developed a new "Personal Rapid Transport System," which should be available in 2009. The pods are driverless little cars, but use battery Personal TransportationPersonal Transportationpower - and less energy over all. Eventually, we could use them like taxis to go from the airport to select destinations, including close-by hotels, but they'll start out as a shuttle to a business class parking lot.

According to the developers, people would rather ride in an unmanned vehicle than with strangers (like in a taxi or bus). Neat idea, but will they be cheaper to use than a taxi, and better for the environment than a similarly designed shuttle bus?

Would you pay for this service?
