Queen Elizabeth goes virtual with her Christmas greetings

Every year since 1957 the Queen has broadcasted her special Christmas message via the BBC, a stately and stuffy recap of the past year and her hopes for the Buckingham PalaceBuckingham Palacefuture. Ratings must be down though, because the Queen is going YouTube this year.

Get yourself onto the Royal Channel and you can watch up to 18 videos that take you on a romp through royal history. The Queen Mother's wedding in 1923 through to her own accession and coronation to a day in the life of Prince Charles. It's not reality TV or even remotely close to voyeurism. Everything on the site has been carefully screened.

But still, it's a peek inside a world many of us will never see.

There are no videos of Princess Diana or her sons, which is disappointing. Apparently the reasoning behind the videos is to reach out to young people and make the Queen more accessible. Not sure how videos of an 80-something monarch and her almost 60-year-old son are going to reach anyone other than history buffs.

Put a few videos up about Prince William and we'll all be in like Flynn though.
