  • Ecotourism emerged in the mainstream and everyone rushed to get their green on. Some did it better than others.
  • JetBlue stranded passengers on the runway, leaving some people strapped into their seats for as long as 11 hours. The fiasco resulted in more than 1000 cancelled flights and $30 million in lost revenue.
  • The famous Stardust Resort & Casino was leveled to make room for a new mega-resort.
  • Google's My Maps was born, giving users the ability to customize maps and embed them on websites.
  • Passport regulations were relaxed in May and June but only moderately.
  • In July, the new Seven Wonders of the World were revealed. The only ancient wonder to make it was the Great Pyramid at Giza.
  • Boeing's new Dreamliner 787 took flight. It uses 20% less fuel than other jets in the same class and is made entirely of carbon fiber.
  • Virgin America arrived in the U.S. and began signing on celebrities almost immediately.
  • Airbus 380 took its inaugural flight.
  • JetBlue capped the year by launching BetaBlue, in-flight Wi-Fi service.
  • GoGirlfriend arrived on the travel scene.
