Gatlinburg Accommodations
Finding a room with a view of the Smokies
Need a fresh air breather? Forget the Swiss Alps,
Gatlinburg - Gateway to the SmokiesGatlinburg is just what the doctor ordered.
During a recent trip to Gatlinburg, I stayed at the Park Vista Hotel. Not a 4-star by any stretch of the imagination, but my 12th floor patio let me watch the sun set over the Smokies each night. I'm told every room has an incredible view - not hard to imagine considering the town is flanked on 3 sides by mountains.
The road leading up to the hotel was a nightmare, but the old-time trolleys take it like New York cabbies. Unless you're used to mountain driving (and have chains on your tires), park your car at the hotel and use the trolley to get back and forth to town.
Lodge at Buckberry CreekIf you're looking for something a little more upscale, The Lodge at Buckberry Creek sits on the opposite side of the city. The lodge gets the rustic elegance bang on, but falls short on lack of facilities (no spa, pool or fitness center). There are 45 suites in the lodge and one restaurant that delivers fine dining, Gatlinburg style.
If you're one of the rare few who come to the area to actually experience the Smokies up close and personal, consider LeConte Lodge.
Once you're inside Smoky Mountains National Park,
Le Conte Lodgeyou'll have to hike yourself in and there's no running water or electricity. But bed linens, kerosene lamps and meals are provided - and the air is unlike anything you've ever breathed before.
