Along the Atlantic Coast, on Amelia Island

Mission: get yourself to the beach for some serious face time with the dolphins. Plan of action: harness your inner bond girl and jump on the first flight to Fernandina Beach. The snowy white beach has remained untouched by commercialism, which makes it a haven for anyone who wants to exchange the fast track for some sand between your toes.

Fernandina BeachFernandina BeachNeed more? A beautiful sunrise cresting over preserved dunes will inspire you to lounge or laze or maybe even pledge your "I do's" on the beach, riding horseback along the shore.

Accommodations: Choose a honeymoon suite at a resort of B&B on Fernandina Beach, but our favorite is Amelia Island Plantation. It's bond girl approved. If you're on a family vacation, chose between local motels, hotels or resorts in the downtown area. Full-facility campsites are also available.

Fernandina Beach Local Activities: Kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding on the beach, camping and sunset sails are all popular activities. Want to try something a little different? Rent a segway and tour the beach.

Fernandina Beach Area Attractions: The Amelia Lighthouse offers tours on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. The 67ft structure was constructed on Amelia Island in 1830 and has been undergoing restoration since 2002. Get the family together and enjoy a day of learning how to sail at the Windward Sailing School, or create memories on Charter the Voyager; a 100ft replica of a gaff-rigged schooner from the 1840's.

Fernandina Beach Area Events:

  • Concours d'Elegance (March): An infamous car show featuring the best of the best classic and historical automobiles.
  • Amelia Island Film Festival (September): Film Festival, featuring screenings, workshops, lectures and exhibits.

Fernandina Beach Nightlife: Visit the Palace Saloon in downtown Fernandina and try a "Pirates Punch." It features daily live entertainment from rock to acoustical. The Frisky Mermaid Bar and Grill serves a "Frisky Mermaid," which is described as a "Caribbean sextuplet of rum, liqueurs, and a few other secret ingredients." If you're looking for something more romantic, take a chartered sunset cruise on the Voyager or try horseback riding on the beach.

Fernandina Beach Weather: Summers get very hot, reaching highs of up to 90F. Winters are also warmer than average, reaching highs of more than 70F.

Fernandina Beach Facilities: Fernandina Beach does not have on-duty lifeguards. Public washrooms and showers are located along the boardwalk.

Beach Fees: $5 per vehicle up to 8 passengers.
