Masterpiece Found in Trash
Dumpster Diving in Manhattan Turns a Profit
Elizabeth Gibson has walked the same route in Manhattan for 4 years, but her walk recently turned up a piece of art stolen 20 years ago. Although the art was originally bought for $55,000US, it's likely worth a cool million now, says a representative for Sotheby's Auction House.
The bright colors of the artwork sticking out of the trash can caught Gibson's eye. After digging into Internet research and then watching the "Antiques Roadshow" she discovered it was more than just a pretty picture. Painted by Mexican artist, Rufino Tamayo and titled "Tres Personajes," it's an important piece of work in the art world.
Gibson returned the art to the original owners, who wish to remain anonymous. The piece will be auctioned off at Sotheby's Latin-American Art Auction on November 20, 2007, in New York City - just in case you plan to be in the area.
I wonder if Gibson claimed a finder's fee?
The whole story makes me want to take a stroll in Manhattan. Wonder what the chances of art/lightning striking twice are?
