Caribbean Island Vacations

Research before you go!

Sparkling blue water, white sandy beaches - a tropical chain of wonder that curves from the lush rainforest coast of Venezuela to Cuba's famous beaches.

But the Caribbean is about more than just the beaches - it's all the stuff in between - bright and beautiful Junkanoo in Nassau, jammin' on the beach in Havana,Barbados ShoppingBarbados Shopping Sting Ray City in Grand Cayman, the Pitons in St. Lucia and windsurfing at Cabarete, Dominican Republic.

If you're planning your inaugural trip to the Caribbean, a little research will save time, frustration and unplanned expenses. Unwelcome traveling companions on any vacation.

After all the research you'll do, you could write your PhD on the Caribbean and still not grasp all the nuances and quirky beauty that make each island spectacular.

Before you book your cruise or resort, decide on your priorities. Do you want to lie on the beach, shop duty free, scuba dive, trek through the tree tops or maybe immerse yourself in culture? Then start visiting sites that will give you the real deal, not PR double talk. Here's a few to get you started:

  • A-Z Caribbean Islands: Great for pre-trip planning
  • Caribbean Travel & Life Magazine: Dream-worthy photos, planning tips and links to places you want to go.
  • Cruise Critic: Look in the reviews section for honest information about industry news, cruise lines and even specific ships.
  • Caribseek: A good directory of links.
  • Got some Caribbean vacation planning tips? We'd love to hear them.

    • On Surviving a Hurricane While Traveling, Lisa S. said "Growing up in good ole NC, I have survived my share of storms. Actually, where I sit currently (on a barrier island) has been under water many times. Staying on an island is scary. We leave if it is over a CAT 1. The most important thing for us is to fill our gas tanks at the first inkling that there may be a storm. Water, medicines, non perishable food, they're all really important. Honestly, if it is a big storm, alcohol later serves as pay for work. We stock up on EVERYTHING. We start eating out of the freezer days before (like we did tonight, getting ready for Earl). You don't want much to go bad. Then we tie up all the trash cans, secure grills, and hold on for dear life :)"

Buses are not apt to be targets like cars with US plates that also can be stolen. The buses in Mexico are very comfortable like flying in a plane they often have movies and it is safer.Plan your trip and don't travel alone especially if you are female.Women traveling alone are a target Good luck and stay alert."
