How to be a Badass (healthy) Travel Girl

Staying sane & healthy guide for lazy travelers

Got travel on your calendar? Whether it’s for business or fun, there’s no shortage of temptation to eat your way through your travels. A glass of wine here, a cheese tray there, a buffet for breakfast every chance you get. How’s a girl to stay healthy while traveling?

Staying healthy while traveling is simple if you follow GoGirlfriend’s 7 badass health-r-iffic travel tips. Unlike the 7 deadly sins (which can be fun), these tips will keep you on your game, feeling good AND enjoying your travels.

GoGirlfriend’s 7 badass healthy travel tips

Trick yourself into exercising

think healthy and badassMuch of my travel is for business with days bookended by insanely early breakfast meetings and late-night cocktails. My trick? If there’s no time to hit the gym, squeeze exercising in between everything else.

  • Always take the stairs.
  • Park 3 blocks away from my meeting.
  • Walk instead of sitting when waiting for my flight. Even better, do chair squats. Sure, you’ll look funny but you’ll be the one laughing afterward.

Sin strategically

If you’re a breakfast girl, relish every morsel – but then curb your enthusiasm later in the day. If wine and cheese is your thing, go light earlier in the day in anticipation of the delish coming your way later. Life’s too short not to enjoy the stuff you love – it’s all about balance, baby.

Stock the minibar yourself

On your way to the hotel, make a pit stop at the grocery store and stock up on some fresh fruit and veggies to snack on – instead of those salty, high-fat snacks waiting at the hotel for you. You’ll save money AND your waistline.

Focus on maintaining

Travel is delicious and decadent and, let’s be honest, restraint is overrated. Instead of watching every bite that goes in your mouth, focus on how your clothes fit. If your pants start to feel snug, order a Perrier instead of wine or skip the buffet in favor of a smoothie. Bloating is a sign of over-indulging and it usually takes very little effort to get back on track.

Sleep like the dead

make sure you get your beauty sleepThis might sound like a rather pedestrian tip, but getting enough sleep when you’re traveling can help keep your hand out of food bag. Research points to sleep deprivation as a leading cause of overeating – yikes! Dr. Breus can help you eat, sleep and travel – healthy – and overcome jetlag.

Drink to excess

When I travel, drinking is a required activity. To avoid a hangover and puffy eyes the next morning (which is never in fashion), I chug a glass of water every time I take a bio break. And before I hit the bed, I chug another one. This strategy (obviously) creates a lot more bio breaks but it does wonders for being bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the morning.

Flex your sense of humor

From delayed or canceled flights to hotel flubs to horrifying restaurant experiences, life is an adventure when you’re traveling. Keeping your sense of humor at the forefront will help you find the opportunities hidden inside the problems. Flight delay? Walk the airport instead of sulking. Bad food experience? Time to write a blog post. And when all else fails, head to the bar and order a beer – you can’t be badass healthy all the time.

It is the New Terra Cotta Clothing Optional Resort and Spa in sunny Palm Springs, California.. The original Terra Cotta Inn was a fantastic nude resort. Repeat guests from around the world stayed there. TCI was sold in Nov 2015 and greatly missed. Well, this July 2017, it was revived at a new location in Palm Springs. The site is HotelTerraCotta.com. Guests are super happy. It's perfect for couples and girlfriend getaways. And Tom and Mary Clare from the original Terra Cotta Inn work with us, so it has the same relaxing, fun feel. "

I understand in the litigious US of A, hotels need to prevent folks from throwing themselves out the windows (or else the hotel could be sued?!!). Ok, fine. But for those of us who dislike A/C and only use it when absolutely necessary, can't we still have the option for some FRESH AIR? There ARE ways to allow windows to open up only so much, while at the same time preventing an entire body from throwing itself out the window. Bedskirts. Am I the only one who gets the skeevies when I see hotel beds with bedskirts that hit the floor? I always had images of food crumbs, bugs, and god only knows what...as being hidden behind that bedskirt. I'd much rather a bedskirt that's at least 2" above the (usually carpetted) floor. Towels. Can't we get nicer towels that don't feel like cardboard? Carpetting. Am I the only one who never walks barefoot in a hotel room ...esp when there's carpet? Blech. I'm sure those things are very rarely cleaned. "
