the girl & the fig

Country French in the heart of Sonoma

The French haven't invaded since Napoleon, but after eating at "the girl and the fig," we're ready to invite them with open arms.

In the heart of Sonoma (right beside the Sonoma the girl and the figthe girl and the figHotel), there's a girl, Sondra Bernstein, lots of figs and a small French bistro that's big on taste.

Bernstein opened the restaurant in 1997, with a mission to showcase Mother Nature's true flavors. One of the signature dishes, a salad prepared with arugula, goat cheese, pancetta, pecans, and grilled figs, is an homage to all that's good and healthy in the valley.

"When you eat this salad, try to get a little bit of the girl and the figthe girl and the figeverything on the fork and it will be perfect," says executive chef John Toulze.

When I visited last spring, I fell in love with the mustard-yellow walls and modern burlesque artwork. Like in France, the tables are tiny and close together and the food (depending on your choice) can be rich, rich, rich. Ask the chef to go easy on the cream and butter.

I was only able to squeeze in a quick lunch, but the wild mushroom risotto cake melted my resistance.

Girl, I dare you to stand firm against this kind of French invasion.

If you go...

Open daily from 11:30am to 10pm. Sunday brunch is served 10am to 3:00pm. Entrées range from $18-$30US, and reservations are recommended.

The girl and the fig will be on Silversea Cruises. Check out <a href="http://www.mmtravel.net/base.php?page=description&category=collection&subcategory=08barcelonarome>Silversea's August 16, 2008</a> cruise from Barcelona to Rome. Sondra Bernstein, who owns the girl and the fig, and executive chef John Toulze will be aboard to host a Food & Wine cruise. There’ll be cooking demonstrations, food and wine discussions, and special receptions and culinary-themed walking tours. Should be fun for everyone who enjoys divine gourmet food and luxury travel. FYI, I read that Silversea was just named the Number-One overall luxury cruise line in the 2008 Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI) survey.

It is the New Terra Cotta Clothing Optional Resort and Spa in sunny Palm Springs, California.. The original Terra Cotta Inn was a fantastic nude resort. Repeat guests from around the world stayed there. TCI was sold in Nov 2015 and greatly missed. Well, this July 2017, it was revived at a new location in Palm Springs. The site is HotelTerraCotta.com. Guests are super happy. It's perfect for couples and girlfriend getaways. And Tom and Mary Clare from the original Terra Cotta Inn work with us, so it has the same relaxing, fun feel. "

I understand in the litigious US of A, hotels need to prevent folks from throwing themselves out the windows (or else the hotel could be sued?!!). Ok, fine. But for those of us who dislike A/C and only use it when absolutely necessary, can't we still have the option for some FRESH AIR? There ARE ways to allow windows to open up only so much, while at the same time preventing an entire body from throwing itself out the window. Bedskirts. Am I the only one who gets the skeevies when I see hotel beds with bedskirts that hit the floor? I always had images of food crumbs, bugs, and god only knows what...as being hidden behind that bedskirt. I'd much rather a bedskirt that's at least 2" above the (usually carpetted) floor. Towels. Can't we get nicer towels that don't feel like cardboard? Carpetting. Am I the only one who never walks barefoot in a hotel room ...esp when there's carpet? Blech. I'm sure those things are very rarely cleaned. "

They're not quite as cheap as a SIM card from the country you're visiting, but they're cheaper than a roaming plan on your domestic SIM and will save you a lot of time if you're visiting several countries. I got mine from Telestial, which also offers a range of cheap travel phones and other useful products (adapters, etc)."
