Hot Tip of The Day

Choosing Your Dinner Wine

Cheers to the New YearCheers to the New YearLittle skittish about ordering wine with dinner? It can be confusing, but with a few tips you'll be exploring and enjoying wine without fear.

Remember that you'll find a selection of blended wines as well as a varietal wine selection.

Varietal wines are made from a specific grape variety bearing the name of that grape (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Gewürztraminer, etc). They have distinctive tastes and go best with specific types of food. Bended wines are simply a blending of grapes, which can make for a smoother finish.

When in doubt ask for the chef's favorite pairing with your dinner choice. And remember, you can try a different wine with each course or enjoy a wine flight, which is a sampling of a number of different wines at the same time.

Find an Internet Café

Staying ConnectedStaying ConnectedNeed to connect with home or the office while you're away? Instead of lugging your laptop, find out where you can make a connection quickly. Most hotels have a business center, but if yours doesn't, go online before you leave home to source out nearby Internet cafés.

If you can't find a café near you, look up the Convention and Visitor's Bureau in the city you'll be visiting. They should have an up-to-date listing of local Wifi hotspots.

And make sure your mail server can be accessed via a web browser. If it can't, use a free service to have your mail forwarded.

Carry-On Luggage Tips

Casauri ToteCasauri ToteWhen I travel, I'd rather pack my stuff in a carry-on than wait at the conveyer belt for hours. But my goal isn't to see how much stuff I can cram into a small bag. It's to travel lightly. These few rules will help you downsize your life for travel:

  • Use a packing list: If something's not on that list it has no business being in your bag.
  • Uniform my clothes: Choose a color scheme and make sure every item has at least 2 possible matches.
  • Layer it: Instead of packing a heavier coat, layer clothes and pack a hat and gloves.
  • Choose wash n'wear: Wash clothes in the hotel sink and hang in the shower stall to dry if you can't get to a laundromat or don't want to pay the sometimes hefty hotel fees.
  • Know what's prohibited: Consult the TSA to make sure the stuff in your carry-on won't land you in a pile of trouble at the gate.

Avoid booking fees

Online agencies claim lower fares, but the airlines themselves usually offer the lowest rate - minus the booking fee.

For extra savings, always book online insteaqd of calling. Talking to a real person adds an extra $10 to your fare.

Save Money at Theme Parks

Universal Studios, Disney, any theme park you can think of - you're going to spend the equivalent of a mortgage payment if you're plan to spend visit for more than a day. Save money by purchasing your day passes online before you leave home. You'll often find deals based on days visited and number of people in your party.

If you wait until you arrive at the gate, you'll pay the premium price.

Check In Early

Most airlines recommend arriving 90 minutes prior to your flight for domestic travel, 2 hours for international. But peak times may leave you begging your fellow passengers to let you cut in line.

Peak travel times are Monday through Friday, 7 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 8pm. Arrive an extra half hour early during those times and on holidays and weekends. You might have extra time to kill while you wait for your flight, but at least you won't be standing at security when they make the last call.

Economical Currency Exchanging

If you're traveling outside the U.S. this holiday season, think about where you'll exchange your currency. Airports, banks and most hotels offer exchange services, but doing it online ahead of time can save you time and service charges.

  • On 5 Nudist Resorts that Will Blow Your Mind, John Ruze said "Hi Julia, There is a brand new, very popular nudist resort you should think about reporting on in your next article about naturism. It is the New Terra Cotta Clothing Optional Resort and Spa in sunny Palm Springs, California.. The original Terra Cotta Inn was a fantastic nude resort. Repeat guests from around the world stayed there. TCI was sold in Nov 2015 and greatly missed. Well, this July 2017, it was revived at a new location in Palm Springs. The site is HotelTerraCotta.com. Guests are super happy. It's perfect for couples and girlfriend getaways. And Tom and Mary Clare from the original Terra Cotta Inn work with us, so it has the same relaxing, fun feel. "

I understand in the litigious US of A, hotels need to prevent folks from throwing themselves out the windows (or else the hotel could be sued?!!). Ok, fine. But for those of us who dislike A/C and only use it when absolutely necessary, can't we still have the option for some FRESH AIR? There ARE ways to allow windows to open up only so much, while at the same time preventing an entire body from throwing itself out the window. Bedskirts. Am I the only one who gets the skeevies when I see hotel beds with bedskirts that hit the floor? I always had images of food crumbs, bugs, and god only knows what...as being hidden behind that bedskirt. I'd much rather a bedskirt that's at least 2" above the (usually carpetted) floor. Towels. Can't we get nicer towels that don't feel like cardboard? Carpetting. Am I the only one who never walks barefoot in a hotel room ...esp when there's carpet? Blech. I'm sure those things are very rarely cleaned. "

  • On Travel Advice for Visiting a New Country, NJB said "Hi Stacy, great article! Just wanted to say, you can get an international SIM card that works in multiple countries and on cruise ships. They're not quite as cheap as a SIM card from the country you're visiting, but they're cheaper than a roaming plan on your domestic SIM and will save you a lot of time if you're visiting several countries. I got mine from Telestial, which also offers a range of cheap travel phones and other useful products (adapters, etc)."
