National Geographic lists top 10 countries where you can adventure green

Thirty years ago, travelers interested in ecotourism were granola-crunching tree-huggers, hippies. They weren't exactly typical. Today, sustainable, responsible tourism is a blooming success worldwide. It's definitely mainstream now.

  • He applauds the "eco success" of Brazil, Dubai, Canada, Belize and Kenya.

  • Laos and Ireland have reached a "tipping point," which promises future ecotourism success.

  • On the watch list are Turks & Caicos and Greece, where "immediate eco-action is needed" to reverse ecological systems that are overtaxed by tourism.

We love that he ferrets out the best place for an eco-adventure in each country and what you can expect to pay if you go. Think Dubai isn't exactly the poster-country or eco-responsibility? They do have indoor skiing...

Visit the Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa, a leader in spa ecotourism. You'll find yourself in the middle of a conservation reserve where you can watch the Arabian oryx - one of the world's rarest animals - between "green" spa treatments.

And in Canada you can raft 132 miles through icebergs, grizzlies, moose and osprey.
