I can't take time off work right now - wah, wah, wah...

Vacation PlanningVacation PlanningI have a dear friend, whose name I'll keep anonymous. Time after time, I try to get her to come on one of my adventure trips.

Each and every time she says the same thing: "Dez, it's not that I don't want to go. I dream about going on one of your trips. I just have to work too much!"

Best of Both AdventuresBest of Both Adventures

Oh, please, clear your desk and your mind with my advice for an easy plan.

  • Two months ahead: E-mail your boss 2 vacation dates that you like and ask which one she prefers. Include a summary of the projects you're working on and explain why these dates won't interfere.
  • Week before: Alert clients and coworkers that you'll be leaving town.
  • Week of: Ask your boss who should cover for you in your absence. Break the news to your colleague, then hand over your most urgent projects with detailed instructions.
  • Day before: Touch base with your boss and coworker. Tell them you will not check e-mail or voice mail. You're going on vacation.

Sound easy? Share your tips for unchaining yourself from your desk.

Got a question for Dez? Post it here and I'll make sure she gets it.

I set up Hands Up Holidays with the passion to create amazing vacations where people got to learn about other cultures, explore a destination, and interact meaningfully with the locals, through the medium of carefully consulted volunteer projects. Families do indeed get a lot out of our trips, as do couples, single travellers, and seniors. Yours in Adventures That Count Chris "

Right now the agencies are still dealing with a lot of paperwork to get into Myanmar. However, once they are in, they need names and applications on file so they can call on you when they are ready to go. If your vacation dates are more structured, why don't you contact an agency which runs volunteer programs all the time, you'll be able to make a difference somewhere without driving your boss nuts waiting to find out when you're going. Good luck!"
