Poor Planning Isn't a Good Enough Excuse
I can't take time off work right now - wah, wah, wah...
Vacation PlanningI have a dear friend, whose name I'll keep anonymous. Time after time, I try to get her to come on one of my adventure trips.
Each and every time she says the same thing: "Dez, it's not that I don't want to go. I dream about going on one of your trips. I just have to work too much!"
Oh, please, clear your desk and your mind with my advice for an easy plan.
-
Two months ahead: E-mail your boss 2 vacation dates that you like and ask which one she prefers. Include a summary of the projects you're working on and explain why these dates won't interfere.
-
Week before: Alert clients and coworkers that you'll be leaving town.
-
Week of: Ask your boss who should cover for you in your absence. Break the news to your colleague, then hand over your most urgent projects with detailed instructions.
-
Day before: Touch base with your boss and coworker. Tell them you will not check e-mail or voice mail. You're going on vacation.
Sound easy? Share your tips for unchaining yourself from your desk.
Got a question for Dez? Post it here and I'll make sure she gets it.
